The Federalist Party, referred to as the Pro-Administration party during the 1780s, was the first American political party. It existed from the early 1790s to 1868. In the aftermath of the American Civil War it faded away. After the collapse of the Federalist Party in the course of the 1868 presidential election, most surviving Federalists joined the new New Social Republican Party, which was combined with other liberal, but anti-Liberty Party groups.
